Health Mystery in New York: Heart Disease

Over 20 years in a practice which stresses prevention and health education, cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Fredric J. Vagnini finds himself perplexed at that news headline. Alluding to Surgeon General Everrett Koop's "War on Obesity" -- a trigger for heart disease, he has remarked. "I'm afraid we are losing the war." And he relates his experience of shock and disappointment at the sight of many overweight suburban shoppers while walking through a mall earlier in the day.

Again this September, Dr. Vagnini will bring his heart focused health education campaign into midtown with the 2nd Annual New York Heart, Diabetes, and Weight Loss Conference, September 24th at the New Yorker Hotel. (Last year the conference was called The New York Obesity Conference.)

Dr. Vagnini will draw conference attendance from his audience of 50,000 listeners to his weekly radio call-in program, The Heart Show, WOR 710 (Sunday 4 PM). Each week he closes the show with his slogan...

"Heart attacks and strokes can be prevented!"

The newspaper report indicated that the incidence of heart disease is significantly higher in the New York region than in most other regions of the country. Experts do not attribute the mysterious difference to stress and the fast pace of the city. It could be that New Yorkers are just not getting the message and attending to their health.

The message that heart disease can be prevented will again be broadcast at Dr. Vagnini's upcoming health education conference. And in addition, experts will lecture on diabetes management, stress, and the risk condition of insulin resistance -- all related to heart disease.
